The SV-98 comes with double-stack detachable box magazines made out of fiberglass-reinforced nylon with metal inserts capable of holding 10 rounds. The rifle was developed to fire both 7N1 standard sniper rounds and 7N14 enhanced penetration rounds, as well as "Extra" match-grade sport cartridges. A carrying handle can be attached to the stock in order to prevent the operator from grasping the rifle by its aiming optics during quick position changes or while on the march.Īccording to the manufacturer, the SV-98 is designed to engage various targets at a range of up to 1,000 m (1,100 yd) with proper ammunition. The length of both bipod legs is independently adjustable and the rear monopod folds into the stock. The barrel has 4 grooves right-hand rifling and a 320 mm (1 in 12.6 in) twist rate, and features a threaded muzzle which can accept the standard provided conical birdcage-pattern muzzle brake or a specially designed 23db (A) suppressor that requires the use of subsonic ammunition. The manually-operated bolt action has a rotating bolt with three symmetrically-spaced frontal lugs. The heart of the SV-98 is a cold-hammer forged receiver and a cold-hammer forged free-floating heavy barrel, which can be chrome lined to order. These three calibers also happen to be the primary chambering options for the SV-98. Izhmash produces versions of the Record target rifle chambered in. The SV-98 is based on the Record 300m series of full-bore sport-shooting rifles, also manufactured by Izhmash.
It is also in use with multiple sniper units of the Russian Armed Forces, and has been the primary sniper rifle of the Russian Airborne Troops since 2015. It is used by various Russian law enforcement and counter-terrorist forces, including the FSB, Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the FSO.
